Poem#3: The Armful

THE POEM: The Armful
For every parcel I stoop down to seize I lose some other off my arms and knees, And the whole pile is slipping, bottles, buns, Extremes too hard to comprehend at. once Yet nothing I should care to leave behind. With all I have to hold with hand and mind And heart, if need be, I will do my best. To keep their building balanced at my breast. I crouch down to prevent them as they fall; Then sit down in the middle of them all. I had to drop the armful in the road And try to stack them in a better load.

PERSONAL RESPONSE

While reading this poem, it was really easy to understand the points the writer is trying to say and also it was easy to understand the situation inside the poem unlike other difficult poems such as sonnets or haikus. I like the realistic descriptions of Robert Frost because it makes it easier to understand the poem. While reading this poem, I remembered the time when I had to carry a lot of things to home from school. I was in 6th grade and it was the day before winter vacation and I had to carry all the things that I left in school. Since I had to walk to home with all those heavy loads, it felt like hell and because it was so heavy to carry, I decided to call a taxi instead of walking. I loaded all my baggage to the taxi and that was the only moment I could enjoy. The problem happened when I had to unload all the things from the taxi and had to carry them again. In order to carry the things, I crouched and then all of a sudden my back started to hurt so badly. My house was right in front and there was no one that could help me. So I had to carry the things one by one and at that moment, I felt like giving up but I just could not. This is similar to the poem in line 5 where it says “Yet nothing I should care to leave behind.”

TP-CASTT

TITLE: The title of this poem reminds me of the moment when I had to carry a lot of things. I hope that this poem will also talk about the writer's experience about walking with armful.

PARAPHRASE:
I stoop down to pick up my bundles
Some of it fell off my arms and knees
The pile I held kept slipping, bottles and buns
It was so hard to carry all those things at once
But I could not leave anything behind
I had to hold them with both my hand and mind
I will try my best with my heart
I tried to balance them in my breast
I crouched down to prevent them from falling
But then I had to sit down
I dropped the bundles in the middle of the road
And I organized them in a better way to carry again

CONNOTATION: (Formal Analysis)
1. Structure: Rhyme scheme AABBCCDDEEFF, Iambic pentameter, Punctuation-commas,
2. Speaker: A person holding a lot of things, Audience: No specific audience
3. Figurative Language: none
4. Imagery: none
5. Repetition: none

ATTITUDE: agitated

SHIFTS: Shifts occur in line 10. The speaker tried his/her best to balance the things in his/her arm. But then when the speaker crouched to balance, she/he suddenly lost his/her balance and had to sit down. There is a shift from struggling to giving up.

TITLE: After reading this poem, I have noticed that the best word to describe this poem is "Armful" because the speaker is talking about the things she/he had to carry without leaving them behind. By giving a situation, the writer of this poem is describing how painful it is to be armful.

THEME: You should never give up
