Poem#2: A Red, Red Rose

THE POEM: A RED, RED ROSE

O my Luve's like a red, red rose
That's newly sprung in June;
O my Luve's like the melodie
That's sweetly play'd in tune.

As fair art thou, my bonnie lass,
So deep in luve am I:
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
Till a' the seas gang dry:

Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi' the sun:
I will luve thee still, my dear,
While the sands o' life shall run.

And fare thee well, my only Luve
And fare thee well, a while!
And I will come again, my Luve,
Tho' it were ten thousand mile.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Robert Burns was a Scottish poet who was celebrated world wide. He not only wrote poems in Scots language but also in standard English. He was the pioneer of Romantic movement and his death was a great inspiration to the liberalism and socialism. He had major influence to the Scottish literature and in 2009, he was chosen the greatest Scot in a vote run by a TV channel STV.

PERSONAL RESPONSE
The poem A Red, Red Rose reminds me of the girl I used to like when I was in 6th grade. The girl I loved was in the same class. I had the chance to become close friends with each other when our school went to a field trip. She sat next to me in the bus and I was very nervous that I sweat so much. While I was trying to cool off, she was listening to a music. I asked her if I could listen music together and she said yes. That was the first time I truely fell in love. She sang songs and it really made me feel happy. I still cannot forget the moment and as the phrase "O My Luve's like a red, red rose,"and "O my Luve's like the melodie that's sweetle play'd in tune!" reminds me of her singing right next to me. That was the moment that I felt that I was deeply in love like the phrase "So deep in luve am I". After the field trip I asked her out and she accepted my request. However, the relationship that felt like it will last forever ended in three months. She had to go to the United States to study abroad. I texted with her till the moment the airplane departed and I was so depressed when she could not answer to my text any more. It was hard for me to bear the situation and I missed her so much that I felt like doing nothing. The phrase "And fare thee well a while! And I will come again, my Luve, Tho' it were then thousand mile" reminds me of that moment.

TP-CASTT

TITLE: A Red, Red Rose might be talking about a red rose and it's features. I think that this poem will somehow relate the features of a rose to love.

PARAPHRASE:
My love is similar to a red rose
That has bloomed in June
My love is like a melody
A sweet melody in tune

You are so fair my lovely lady
I am so deeply in love
I will love you forever my lovely lady
Until all the seas dries up

Until all the seas dries up my dear
And the rocks melt in the sun
Still I will love you my dear
While the sands of life run on

Have a nice day, my only love
I won't see you a while
But I will come to see you
Though it is ten thousand miles

CONNOTATION: (Formal Analysis)
In line 1 and 2, feelings of love are compared to the red red rose. In line 3 and 4, his feelings of love is compared to a melody. He is describing the woman he loves and compares her to a melody and a rose. "I will love thee still my dear" is repeating in verse 2 and 3 line 3 which is a repetition. Imagery could be found such as "Dried up seas, rocks melting with the sun, sands o' life". This poem could be sung by either male or female.

ATTITUDE: In stanza 1,2 and 3, the attitude of the speaker is praising his love. By giving specific details of his love, he is praising his love. However, in stanza 4, the tone somewhat becomes sad by saying farewell to his love.

SHIFTS:
1st stanza: Speaker praises his love by comparing it to melody and rose
2nd stanza: Emphasizes his strong love towards his love
3rd stanza: Shows that his love will last long
4th stanza: Says goodbye to his love and promises to see again
The first three stanza is talking about his strong love towards his love. However, in stanza four, the speaker is saying farewell to his love. There is a shift from praising to somewhat depressed.

TITLE: Now that I read the poem, I have noticed that the title "A Red Red Rose" actually represents the speaker's love. Although the rose is only mentioned in stanza 1, the poem is only talking about his love. So, instead of naming the title to something as my love, the author used a metaphor instead to represent his love in the title.

THEME: No matter how long or how far the love is, it won't be a problem.
