in Ms. Ajoste's class in 4th period. This is my first time to create
a blog at bloggers. In this poetry blog, I will post things that are related to
the poems I choose. I will write my personal responses about the poem, about
the author of the poem, TP-CASTT/Rhetorical Triangle Analysis and references. I
will receive comments on any posts I upload.

Poem#5: Rain
THE POEM: Rain
I opened my eyes
And looked up at the rain,
And it dripped in my head
And flowed into my brain,
And all that I hear as I lie in my bed
Is the slishity-slosh of the rain in my head.
I step very softly,
I walk very slow,
I can't do a handstand--
I might overflow,
So pardon the wild crazy thing I just said--
I'm just not the same since there's rain in my head.
And looked up at the rain,
And it dripped in my head
And flowed into my brain,
And all that I hear as I lie in my bed
Is the slishity-slosh of the rain in my head.
I step very softly,
I walk very slow,
I can't do a handstand--
I might overflow,
So pardon the wild crazy thing I just said--
I'm just not the same since there's rain in my head.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Shel Silverstein was born in September 25, 1930 and died in May 8/9, 1999. He was born in America and he had several occupations. He was an American poet, singer-song writer, cartoonist, screenwriter and author of children's book. Throughout his work, he won a 1970 Grammy for "A Boy named Sue" and for his song "I'm Checkin' out", he was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe.
PERSONAL RESPONSE
While reading this poem, I thought that
this poem was really interesting in the way the writer described the rain
falling as rain flowing into his head. I also liked the part when the speaker
said that he was not able to think because of the rain inside the speaker’s
head. Although it does not make any sense, it gave humor to the poem. While
reading this poem, the poem reminded me when I had to get soaked up by the
rain. That happened when I forgot about bringing my umbrella when I had to go
to school. I was in school uniform and it took me 20 minutes to walk to school.
The 20 minutes to school felt like 2 hours and I was really depressed and upset
about the rain. When I arrived in the classroom, I felt like the dirtiest
person in the world and I was embarrassed to show this to my friends. Because
of the rain, I was not able to focus on anything what the teacher explained and
this is similar to the poem in the 2nd stanza line 6, where it says,
“I’m just not the same since there’s rain in my head”. Especially during the
first period, I felt like water was soaking into my brain. The air conditioner felt
like the rain dropping. Unlike the speaker who is imagining the sounds of the
rain, I was not able to imagine the sounds of the rain because the rain was
pouring during the whole day.
TP-CASTT
TITLE: By reading the title, I think this poem will talk about the rain and the characteristics of rain. I hope this poem will not only talk about the rain itself but rather talk about the events that had happened with the writer of this poem.
PARAPHRASE:
My eyes are open
I looked up at the rain
Rain started to fall on my head
Rain flowed into my brain
And the sounds I hear from my bead
Is the sound of the rain in my head
I softly take my step
And start walking slowly
Doing a handstand is impossible for me
I might run over
Sorry for the crazy things I have just said
I have changed ever since rain came in my head
CONNOTATION: (Formal Analysis)
1. Structure: Rhyme in the last two lines in each stanza,
2. Speaker: No specific speaker Audience: No specific audience
3. Figurative language: none
4. Imagery: Sight(flowed into my brain), Touch(dripped in my head)
5. Repetition: and(1st stanza), I(2nd stanza)
ATTITUDE: Imaginative
SHIFTS: Shifts occur in stanza 2 line 5. Before line 5 in stanza 2, the speaker is describing in details about rain dropping on the speaker's head. However, in line 5, the speaker suddenly says that what he said was wild and crazy because rain is in his head.
TITLE: The title "Rain" in this poem is actually the rain "flowing" into the speaker's head. Unlike other people who just ignores about the rain, the speaker feels special about the rain and describe the rain falling to him as rain flowing into his head. By using hyperbole, the poem prompts the readers imaginary and makes it easier to be absorbed into the poem.
THEME: Feel the rain

When I think about my father,
and the years we've had to share
I'm thankful just to know
that his love is always there.
Through the crazy days of youth
and now that I'm "mature"
the special bond between us
is still strong and will endure.
And though he's growing older
he grows sweeter with each year
my "knight in shining armor,"
I'm so glad to have you here!

PERSONAL RESPONSE
What I like in this poem is that although
the poem did not use many poetic devices, the content was great and reminded me
of my dad. I thought about the past when my dad and I went to a lot of places.
Also, in the 2nd stanza line 1 when it says “Through the crazy days
of youth”, this line reminded me of the times when I did not listen to his
words and just did what I wanted to do. Reminiscing the past made me feel sorry
for him and at the same time felt thankful for his love. This poem, which is
mainly talking about a father’s love made me think about the loves he gave to
me. I realized that I did not really cared on the things he did for me and I
felt ashamed for myself. Also, in the 3rd stanza line 1 and 2 where
it says “And though he’s growing older, he grows sweeter each year”, made me
think about my dad growing older. I did not notice that he was growing older
and when I was young I believed that he will never get old. However, by reading
this poem, I felt sad for my dad growing old unlike the poem. I felt sorry for
him sacrificing his own life in order to support my life. I felt sorry for not
even showing a small attention to him after coming here in Saipan. Through this
poem, I had the opportunity to think about my dad’s love.
TP-CASTT

PARAPHRASE:
I think about my father
And the events that happened throughout the years
I feel thankful for knowing
That you always love me
Even though I was crazy in the youth
I am now “mature”
But the strong bond between me and my dad
Will endure no matter what
Even though my father is becoming old
He becomes sweeter as he grows old
He is like the knight in shining armor
I am happy that you are here
CONNOTATION: (Formal Analysis)
1. Structure: 3 quatrains
2. Speaker: A son or a daughter,
Audience: the father of the speaker
3. Figurative Language: Metaphor “knight

In the 1st and 2nd quatrain, the
speaker is talking about the past. However, in the 3rd quatrain,
shifts occur, by talking about the present. In the first two quatrains, she is
thankful for his love that he gave but in the 3rd quatrain, she is
saying that she still loves her father even though he is growing older.

Poem#3: The Armful
THE POEM: The Armful
For every parcel I stoop down to seize I lose some other off my arms and knees, And the whole pile is slipping, bottles, buns, Extremes too hard to comprehend at. once Yet nothing I should care to leave behind. With all I have to hold with hand and mind And heart, if need be, I will do my best. To keep their building balanced at my breast. I crouch down to prevent them as they fall; Then sit down in the middle of them all. I had to drop the armful in the road And try to stack them in a better load.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
TITLE: The title of this poem reminds me of the moment when I had to carry a lot of things. I hope that this poem will also talk about the writer's experience about walking with armful.
PARAPHRASE:
I stoop down to pick up my bundles
Some of it fell off my arms and knees
The pile I held kept slipping, bottles and buns
It was so hard to carry all those things at once
But I could not leave anything behind
I had to hold them with both my hand and mind
I will try my best with my heart
I tried to balance them in my breast
I crouched down to prevent them from falling
But then I had to sit down
I dropped the bundles in the middle of the road
And I organized them in a better way to carry again

ATTITUDE: agitated
SHIFTS: Shifts occur in line 10. The speaker tried his/her best to balance the things in his/her arm. But then when the speaker crouched to balance, she/he suddenly lost his/her balance and had to sit down. There is a shift from struggling to giving up.
TITLE: After reading this poem, I have noticed that the best word to describe this poem is "Armful" because the speaker is talking about the things she/he had to carry without leaving them behind. By giving a situation, the writer of this poem is describing how painful it is to be armful.
THEME: You should never give up

PERSONAL RESPONSE
PERSONAL RESPONSE
While reading this poem, it was really easy
to understand the points the writer is trying to say and also it was easy to
understand the situation inside the poem unlike other difficult poems such as
sonnets or haikus. I like the realistic descriptions of Robert Frost because it
makes it easier to understand the poem. While reading this poem, I remembered
the time when I had to carry a lot of things to home from school. I was in 6th
grade and it was the day before winter vacation and I had to carry all the
things that I left in school. Since I had to walk to home with all those heavy
loads, it felt like hell and because it was so heavy to carry, I decided to call
a taxi instead of walking. I loaded all my baggage to the taxi and that was the
only moment I could enjoy. The problem happened when I had to unload all the things
from the taxi and had to carry them again. In order to carry the things, I
crouched and then all of a sudden my back started to hurt so badly. My house
was right in front and there was no one that could help me. So I had to carry
the things one by one and at that moment, I felt like giving up but I just
could not. This is similar to the poem in line 5 where it says “Yet nothing I
should care to leave behind.”

Poem#2: A Red, Red Rose
THE POEM: A RED, RED ROSE
O my Luve's like a red, red rose
That's newly sprung in June;
O my Luve's like the melodie
That's sweetly play'd in tune.
As fair art thou, my bonnie lass,
So deep in luve am I:
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
Till a' the seas gang dry:
Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi' the sun:
I will luve thee still, my dear,
While the sands o' life shall run.
And fare thee well, my only Luve
And fare thee well, a while!
And I will come again, my Luve,
Tho' it were ten thousand mile.
That's newly sprung in June;
O my Luve's like the melodie
That's sweetly play'd in tune.
As fair art thou, my bonnie lass,
So deep in luve am I:
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
Till a' the seas gang dry:
Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi' the sun:
I will luve thee still, my dear,
While the sands o' life shall run.
And fare thee well, my only Luve
And fare thee well, a while!
And I will come again, my Luve,
Tho' it were ten thousand mile.

He had major influence to the Scottish literature and in 2009, he was chosen the greatest Scot in a vote run by a TV channel STV.
PERSONAL RESPONSE
The poem A Red, Red Rose reminds me of the girl I used to like when I was in 6th grade. The girl I loved was in the same class. I had the chance to become close friends with each other when our school went to a field trip. She sat next to me in the bus and I was very nervous that I sweat so much. While I was trying to cool off, she was listening to a music. I asked her if I could listen music together and she said yes. That was the first time I truely fell in love. She sang songs and it really made me feel happy. I still cannot forget the moment and as the phrase "O My Luve's like a red, red rose,"and "O my Luve's like the melodie that's sweetle play'd in tune!" reminds me of her singing right next to me. That was the moment that I felt that I was deeply in love like the phrase "So deep in luve am I". After the field trip I asked her out and she accepted my request. However, the relationship that felt like it will last forever ended in three months. She had to go to the United States to study abroad. I texted with her till the moment the airplane departed and I was so depressed when she could not answer to my text any more. It was hard for me to bear the situation and I missed her so much that I felt like doing nothing. The phrase "And fare thee well a while! And I will come again, my Luve, Tho' it were then thousand mile" reminds me of that moment.
TP-CASTT
TITLE: A Red, Red Rose might be talking about a red rose and it's features. I think that this poem will somehow relate the features of a rose to love.
PARAPHRASE:
My love is similar to a red rose
That has bloomed in June
My love is like a melody
A sweet melody in tune
You are so fair my lovely lady
I am so deeply in love
I will love you forever my lovely lady
Until all the seas dries up
Until all the seas dries up my dear
And the rocks melt in the sun
Still I will love you my dear
While the sands of life run on
Have a nice day, my only love
I won't see you a while
But I will come to see you
Though it is ten thousand miles
CONNOTATION: (Formal Analysis)
In line 1 and 2, feelings of love are compared to the red red rose. In line 3 and 4, his feelings of love is compared to a melody. He is describing the woman he loves and compares her to a melody and a rose. "I will love thee still my dear" is repeating in verse 2 and 3 line 3 which is a repetition. Imagery could be found such as "Dried up seas, rocks melting with the sun, sands o' life". This poem could be sung by either male or female.
ATTITUDE: In stanza 1,2 and 3, the attitude of the speaker is praising his love. By giving specific details of his love, he is praising his love. However, in stanza 4, the tone somewhat becomes sad by saying farewell to his love.
SHIFTS:
1st stanza: Speaker praises his love by comparing it to melody and rose
2nd stanza: Emphasizes his strong love towards his love
3rd stanza: Shows that his love will last long
4th stanza: Says goodbye to his love and promises to see again
The first three stanza is talking about his strong love towards his love. However, in stanza four, the speaker is saying farewell to his love. There is a shift from praising to somewhat depressed.
TITLE: Now that I read the poem, I have noticed that the title "A Red Red Rose" actually represents the speaker's love. Although the rose is only mentioned in stanza 1, the poem is only talking about his love. So, instead of naming the title to something as my love, the author used a metaphor instead to represent his love in the title.
THEME: No matter how long or how far the love is, it won't be a problem.

THE POEM: A FRIEND
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Edgar Guest is a poet who was famous in the first half of the 20th century. He was born in

TITLE: The title "A Friend" made me think about my friends. I thought about the events that happened with my friends and the friends who I did not meet for a long time. Through the title, I think this poem will talk about the writer's friend who he misses a lot.
PARAPHRASE:
A friend is one who does not hesitate to share
By caring your grief
He meets by chance but decided to stay
He will be quick to praise
A passing whim or a grievous fault
will not make him an enemy
No matter how big or small your need is
He will always help you with all
No matter what changes in your life
He will concern about your welfare
Doesn't matter what your dream is
He will pray for your victory
There are wishes that you can't say
But your friend will have the same wish
The life of being friends with him
Is guarded by both me and him
CONNOTATION: (Formal Analysis)
1. Structure: 4 quatrains, Rhyme scheme AABB in each quatrain, iambic tetrameter
2. Speaker: Someone who knows about the friend, Audience: the "friend" in the poem
3. Figurative language: none
4. Imagery: none
5. Repetition: none
ATTITUDE:
friendly, insightful, lighthearted
SHIFTS:Throughout the entire poem, the speaker is mainly focusing on the characteristic of a friend. In the 1st quatrain, he is describing the friend as someone who praises and cares. In the 2nd quatrain, he is describing the friend who is dependable; nothing could change his friendship and he will always be your strength. In the 3rd quatrain, the friend is concerning about your path and success, and finally in the 4th quatrain, the speaker is describing the friend as someone who has the same wish.
Shifts occur in the 4th quatrain line 3 and 4. Throughout the entire poem, the speaker is describing the characteristics of a friend but in line 3 and 4 in the last stanza, the speaker is saying that the life of being a friend is actually double guarded which wraps up all the characteristics into one conclusion.
TITLE: After reading the poem, I realized that the title did not replace the friend the speaker is missing but rather generalizes the characteristics of a true friend. By explaining what a true friend could be, the author is using the title "A friend" to describe what a friend really is.
THEME: A friend should be someone who cares about you no matter what happens.

PERSONAL RESPONSE
When I read this poem, I liked the part
when the poem had rhyme structure AABB in each stanza. Not only did the rhyme
impressed me but also its meanings as well. This poem reminds me of my friend
in high school in Korea. Whenever I had hard problems and concerns, he was the
one who always dealt with my problems more than I did. In this poem, the 4th
line in stanza 2 relates to his behavior and it reminded me of my friend. This
poem is talking about a friends characteristics and this poem made me think
about my friends. It made me think about whether they are really my friends or
not. Just because I hang around with them doesn’t mean that they are really my
friends. I felt sorry for those who did care me a lot but I didn’t act the same
like I did. Through this poem, I had noticed that if they are true friends,
friends should care each other instead of being an unbalanced relationship.
This poem made me feel sorry for those who I did not care well and reminisce the
past with my friends. I felt thankful for all the friends I had and this poem
gave me motivation to even care more to my friends. Before reading this poem, I
felt sort of lonely, but after reading this poem, I felt reassured thinking
about my true friends who trusted me no matter how far they are. Through this
poem, I reflected my behaviors to my friends.
